Spring 2018 Qualifying Exam

Spring 2018 Qualifying Exam Dates:

The written exam will be on Tuesday January 16, and the oral exam will be on Thursday January 18. By October 15, students notify the department of their intent to take the exam and in which area using this form.

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Water Resources Engineering

Spring 2018 Qualifying Exam Topics:

  • Environmental Engineering (Mass and energy transfer, water chemistry, river pollution, lake eutrophication, groundwater fate and transport of contaminants, water and wastewater treatment, air pollution, risk assessment, solid waste management, global change and global cycles)
  • Geotechnical Engineering (Mechanics of soil, earth retaining structures, seepage and slope stability, foundation design)
  • Structural Engineering (Steel design: fundamentals of beam and column behavior, concrete design: fundamentals of beam and column behavior, structural analysis: matrix methods for beams and trusses, structural mechanics: stress and strain analysis and failure theories, structural dynamics: single-degree-of-freedom systems)
  • Transportation Engineering (Transportation planning, traffic flow theory, car-following models and traffic simulation, statistical models such as linear regression models, statistical tests, and discrete choice models)
  • Water Resources Engineering (Hydraulics, hydrology, and water resources systems)

Students may bring a 10 sided aid sheet (8.5″ x 11″) or 5 pages front and back to the written exam. Nothing may be stapled or attached to the sheets. FE manual (9.3 ed) provided by the department. Calculators are permitted.

Students may not bring any aid materials to the oral exam. In addition to answering questions, students are expected to give a 5 minute research presentation at the start of the oral exam.
