From January 11-18, fifteen students from the GMU ASCE Student Chapter toured Munich, Germany as part of the annual international engineering education trip. The group was accompanied by Dr. Michael Casey, ASCE Faculty Advisor and hosted by Dipl. Ing. Claas Meier and Dr. Ing. Conrad Boley of the Universität der Bundeswehr München (University of the Federal Armed Forces, Munich). At the University, the group toured the Geotechnical Institute and learned about research projects in Collapse Behavior of soils in Afghanistan due to dynamic loads and GIS models for prediction of landslides in the German Alps region. The group also attended a large engineering and construction trade show, toured the facilities of BMW World headquarters, visited the Olympiapark (site of the 1972 Olympic Summer games) and visited the Bavarian Alps.
