On February 19, the Volgenau School celebrated Engineer’s Week with an all day celebration called “Engineer’s Day” in Dewberry Hall. The highlight of the event was the 3rd Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest for High School Students. Twenty One bridges entered the competition for prizes based on the best combination of ultimate strength and visual appeal as well as special award categories. With a bridge weighing only 322 grams, the JEB Stuart High School “Raiders” Team took first place with an impressive 213.4 lb ultimate strength and also the award for highest load. Other winners were from Thomas Edison and Colonial Forge High Schools. The official results can be viewed on the web here. Many staff and students volunteered to run the event including several members from the GMU ASCE Student Chapter.
