Mr. John T. (Til) Hazel, Jr., was awarded the Civil Engineering Institute Engineering Excellence and Leadership Award on March 4. Over 300 guests joined CEI and the department for the annual CEI celebration, lunch, and annual meeting. GMU Provost Peter Stearns and Volgenau School of Engineering Dean Ken Ball welcomed guests. Mr. Hardeep Rana, chairman of CEI, presided and presented the 2013 CEI report. Dr. Deborah Goodings, chair of the Sid and Reva Dewberry Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering, described highlights of the year that illustrated the impressive and continuing advances of the department in its undergraduate program, its graduate program, and its facilities. Rich Benton, vice-chairman of CEI, conducted the business of electing new and returning board members, and introduced the awardee and speaker, Til Hazel. Mr. Hazel spoke on the inevitable compromises — and occasional tensions — between planners and politicians in Northern Virginia’s transportation infrastructure. He concluded by discussing the challenges that lie ahead in a region of continuing growth that is an integral and dynamic part of the National Capital Region.
