The Sid and Reva Dewberry Department of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (CEIE), George Mason University hosted Tong Zhu and Zhejun Liu, two visiting students from the School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), between July 15 and August 3 through the GMU-CEIE/BJTU-STT Research Experiences for Foreign University Undergraduates (REFUU) Program. Its goal is to engage civil engineering undergraduates from BJTU-STT in a real research experience in GMU in the summer immediately before their final year of undergraduate study. During their stay, the two students interacted with faculty and graduate students at GMU. They assisted in ongoing research, working closely with GMU graduate students on a project focusing on Private-Public Partnership in Transportation. Dr. Shanjiang Zhu from CEIE, GMU advised the two visiting students closely during their stay. The department covered the expenses of the two students during their stay at GMU.
The program is designed to build firm partnerships between GMU civil engineering faculty and faculty at BJTU-STT that will last beyond the REFUU summer experience. Tong Zhu and Zhejun Liu thanked CEIE, GMU for their generous host, and expressed strong interests in working with GMU faculty as part of their senior design work. Dr. Deborah Goodings, the Chair of CEIE, and Dr. Xuedong Yan, Vice Dean of BJTU-STT, praised the achievements of REFUU and expressed strong administrative support for this program in the future. The call for applications for REFUU 2014 will be posted in spring, 2014 on the CEIE website.
