On April 9-11, the GMU ASCE Student Chapter participated in the annual Virginia regional conference hosted by Catholic University. GMU ASCE fielded its second steel bridge team ever, led by senior Karim Shalaby. With a construction time of 11:52, the GMU bridge was among the fastest built, but was penalized for its excess deflection. GMU also participated in the surveying, environmental, and “mystery design” competitions. Special thanks go to Jacobo Flores, GMU ASCE President and Megan Salame, 2010 conference chair who organized GMU’s participation in the event. Thanks also go to Cives Steel of Winchester, VA who donated the material and some fabrication as well as Shirley Contracting, Inc. who provided financial support for the team.
