ASCE Students Advance to the National Steel Bridge Competition in Seattle in May

The GMU American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter won third place overall at the regional ASCE Virginias Conference Steel Bridge Contest and will advance to the National Steel Bridge Competition at the University of Washington May 31 – June 1, 2013.

Fourteen universities from across Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. sent teams to the ASCE Virginias Conference April 4-6, 2013. The GMU team’s 1:10 scale model steel bridge was designed and constructed entirely by the GMU team and was evaluated based on construction speed, stiffness, attractiveness, and durability. The GMU bridge placed first in construction speed, stiffness and economy and third place in aesthetic display. The GMU team also won second place in the environmental engineering contest, and third place in technical paper and oral presentation competitions. GMU also designed, constructed and raced their first concrete canoe in this year’s competition.

National competition update:  Out of the 214 schools who competed this year in regional competitions,  49 schools from the United States and Canada continued on to the National Competition in Seattle in May.  In a demanding field with many criteria to arrive at the winners, GMU ASCE students took 7th place in stiffness — this time GMU students beat MIT, Georgia Tech (their bridge collapsed during load test), UC Berkeley, Texas A&M to name a few in stiffness.  Our team lost in other categories such as weight and economy but we are tremendously proud of our recognition in terms of design, especially with a small team, and a budget dwarfed by those of the major players in the competition.
