Second Balfour Beatty Distinguished Scholar: Leonardo Porcacchia

leonardoMr. Leonardo Porcacchia was named as the second recipient of the Balfour Beatty Distinguished Graduate Fellowship, made possible through a gift from the international construction and infrastructure services company, Balfour Beatty. Leonardo is pursuing his Ph.D. under the direction of Dr. Viviana Maggioni. He holds a B.S. in Physics from the University of Pisa, Italy, and an M.S. in Physics of the Atmosphere and Meteorology from the University of Bologna, Italy.

As part of his research work at Mason, Leonardo is developing a framework to better understand uncertainty estimates associated with fine resolution multi-satellite precipitation products. The quantification and inclusion of these error estimates will allow inferences about the accuracy of satellite precipitation data sets and will enhance their deployment in numerous applications, such as hydrological modeling, hazard mitigation, climate change studies, and water management policy. Leonardo’s research will be exceptionally crucial in unmonitored regions of the world for flood forecasting and water resources management, since satellite retrievals represent the only means for precipitation estimates.
