      <title>Why Do Bridges Fail? Is Our Infrastructure Crumbling?</title>

        <![CDATA[<strong>Friday, September 28 at 11:00 AM in the Johnson Center, Room F.</strong>The recent collapse of the I-35W highway bridge in Minneapolis has raised many questions about the safety of our bridges and the general condition of our infrastructure.&nbsp; It is a critical issue since our built infrastructure creates a physical environment for all our activities, professional and personal, and much of this infrastructure was built more than 50 years ago. Infrastructure failures call into question our commitment as a nation to the proper maintenance and management of these public assets.]]>

      <title>Welcome Dr. Girum Urgessa</title>
      <description>The CEIE Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Girum Urgessa to the Faculty. Dr. Urgessa received his Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of New Mexico and his B.S. degree from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. He worked as a research engineer, in the Applied Science Division of Weidlinger Associates in Albuquerque, NM and previously as a structure engineer at Dekker/Perich/Sabatini Ltd. His research interests include computational mechanics, the study of structures subjected to extreme loadings and the use of fiber-reinforced polymers in the design of structures.</description>

      <title>New Volgenau School Building Construction Underway</title>
      <description>Construction of the the new 180,000 sq ft Academic VI/Research II building has begun on the Fairfax campus. The building, which is scheduled to open in fall, 2009, is located at the intersection of Nottaway River Road and Patriot Circle near the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The $61 million project, designed by HOK Architects and being built by Clark Construction, will feature expanded facilities, laboratories, and equipment for the CEIE Department.
Site work including clearing and excavation is complete and the geopeir foundation is being constructed in September.</description>

      <title>Welcome Mr. Gregory Hero</title>
      <description>Mr. Gregory Hero, Executive Director of the Center for Real Estate and Urban Studies, has joined the Department effective in Fall 2007. Mr. Hero brings extensive industry knowledge in real estate and land development and is leading the establishment of the Center for Real Estate, an education-based Center housed in the Volgenau School and partnered with the School of Public Policy and School of Management.</description>
